In my opinion, when it comes to home decor, rugs are the hardest thing to nail down. They are the base layer of any room and should almost always be the starting point for any design project. Because they are so large visually, nailing that down first can help all the other decisions flow.
In the design world I have been seeing so many vintage rugs make a come back. I love the warm and easiness they can bring to a room, but they don’t really fit in a more modern Scandinavian space. The same goes for tribal rugs, they just feel a little too bohemian to bring into a mid-century modern space. I think the typical definition of modern rugs can feel really rigid or harsh but I tend to lean more organic, so let’s call this a modern organic rug round up. I am going to focus on rugs at a few different price points, low-high, that I feel really nail a contemporary aesthetic.
I am pricing 8×10 sized rugs for this post, if you need something smaller it is probably less expensive, yes! I always recommend getting a rug pad. I used a few of these in my own house, so you have a review first hand. At minimum you need a gripper rug pad for hardwood floors, if you can swing something more plush, I like this one. If you are putting your rug over carpet, grab this one, it will make it lay totally flat. It is worth the investment and will make even a cheaper rug feel more plush. Let’s get into it. Rugs are serious business.

Modern Rug Round Up –
$275 and under
1 – All Modern Deray Shag Burnt Orange Area Rug // This is the rug we just bought for our living room. I was so worried I wasn’t going to like the quality, but it is so soft! Plus it seems like it is going to hold up great to my kid. Time will tell.
2 – Wayfair Cameron Warm Gray/Ivory Area Rug // You can’t go wrong with a broken stripe rug. And at this price point “chefs kiss”.
3 – Rugs USA Ivory Moroccan Abstract // Would be the perfect rug to soften up a room or to add lots of texture.
4 – Rugs USA BEIGE ABSTRACT CLOUD SHAG WITH TASSEL // I love the abstract print here. Looks way more expensive than it is in my opinion. The thing with “modern” rugs is that they can always feel so geometric. I love that the shapes here are soft.
5 – Rugs USA GRAY ABSTRACT SQUIGGLES // The pattern here is cool. I like that it is broken in some areas and continuous in others.
6 – Gray Shaggy Checkered Tiles Tassel Area Rug // You can’t tell in this picture here but this rug has some amazing texture.
7 – Jute Rug – Hearth & Hand™ with Magnolia // This would be great layered with something over it, if that is a look that you like. I thought the black with the jute was a nice touch.
8 – Galion Geometric Beige, Pink and Burnt Orange Area Rug // Normally I steer away from anything pink, but I really like how it plays against the rust here.
$500 and under
1 – CB2 Copper with White Stripe Rug // This is a great color. Rust has my heart. Since it is a flat-weave I think it would work great in a higher traffic area.
2 – All Modern Braymer Southwestern Wool Cream/Black Area Rug // I love this rug and considered getting it for our living room. Its wool and the reviews are very positive. The stripe is very bold so you would need to have some smaller patterns in the rest of your room to soften it.
3 – Target Geometric Tufted Rug // One of the few rugs here with lots of hard lines, but see how they don’t repeat? Feels more purposeful.
4 – All Modern Wauseon Power Loom Brown/Beige Rug // How fun are these colors? Would be so cute with some olive or leather couches.
$500-$1000
1 – All Modern Kourtnee Striped Hand-Knotted Wool Ivory/Black Area Rug // I used this rug in our main bedroom and I love how it feels underfoot. It adds a ton of texture without being too busy. Plus it is really well priced for being 100% wool. This is a cheaper version, but it is currently out of stock in ivory. Set an alert so you’ll know when it comes back in stock.
2 – Revival Rune Rug // I first saw this rug when Thimble and Cloth used it under their dining table.
3 – Pottery Barn Triangle Stripe Rug // A good neutral with tons of nice texture.
4 – West Elm Serac Rug // This would be so good in an entry way.
$1000 +
1 – Lulu and Georgia Braeburn Rug // I am dying over this rug! When I finally pull together my other living room, this is a serious contender.
2 – West Elm Painted Mixes Stripes Rug // Great calming color and the reviews say that it is super soft.
3 – Lulu and Georgia LEMIEUX ET CIE BY MOMENI GOUBI RUG // I love the shapes that are in play here. The soft with the hards lines is beautiful. Feels like a piece of art.
4 – The Citizenry SAN PEDRO AREA RUG – OLIVE // Such good colors in this one.
Misc indoor/outdoor rugs that are cute
1 – All Modern Moret Power Loom Gray Indoor/Outdoor Use Rug // Would look great on a patio.
2 – Rugs USA Black Abstract Treasure Rug // I love the fun pattern play here. A little weird but mostly cool.
3 – Pottery Barn SHIBORI ECO-FRIENDLY INDOOR/OUTDOOR RUG // So pretty.
4 – Target Diamond Outdoor Rug Orange // This is a statement color for sure. Would make a deck feel festive.
This one is sold out, but I loved it too.
A few rugs that would be so cute in kids rooms
1 – Restoration Hardware Plus-Sign Handwoven Wool Shag Rug // A little spendy, but looks so so so soft. Would love to see this in a nursery or playroom.
2 – Crate and Barrel Suzette Yellow Geometric Rug // Such a fun pop of color.
3 – Annie Selke Olive Branch Woven Cotton // Soft beautiful colors. I could see a whole palette being built around this.
4 – RUGSUSA Off White Moroccan Diamond Pinstripes Tassel // We used this in Abbott’s Nursery and its super soft! Super affordable as well.
