Spring Cleaning: Where to Begin

It’s the time of year when you start to open your windows and crisp air floods your home for the first time in months. There is new life growing outside and you want to bring some of that freshness into your home. Spring cleaning doesn’t need to be a chore, you can look at it as turning a page into a new season. If you are walking around your home, wondering where to begin, I got you covered.

Before you grab your vacuum and rags, I always find it helpful to “set the mood” to get into the cleaning mindset! Put on your favorite music, open the windows, and throw on a Spring-Inspired simmer pot, and I bet the vibes will be amazing. Next, it’s time to get to work.

Floors

If you are like me and have hardwood floors, it’s that time of year to roll up the rugs and move ALL the furniture to one side of the room. Then grab yourself a mop and get to work. It’s one of my least favorite chores, but you don’t realize how dirty your floors are until they’re clean!

I’m not one to use a traditional mop, but I know they work well. I opt for something a little simpler, like a steam mop! I love any way I can clean without using too many chemicals.

If you have carpet, it’s time to shampoo. I know that feels like the most daunting task, especially when you calculate the shampooing and drying time. That’s why big tasks like this are best done over several days or even weeks! Seeing all the dirt that was once in your carpets get lifted will make it all worth it! I have heard great things about this carpet shampooer, otherwise, I know there are great renting options available.

Windows

I will toot my own horn a bit, but I am good at cleaning my windows throughout the year. I mix equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle and use my favorite microfiber cloths to clean the glass without leaving streaks. BUT, I typically don’t touch the dirt and dust that have collected on the window sills or panes. This is when I get after it! These dusting sponges work great every time.

I also use this time to clean and steam window treatments so everything feels so fresh and so clean!

Trim and Baseboards

I used to try to tackle all my floors, windows, trim, and baseboards all in one big cleaning spree (and sometimes I still do), but now, I usually view my home’s trim and baseboards as their own step in the cleaning process! Much like my DIY glass cleaner, water and vinegar are great for trim and baseboards, but the difference is in how you wipe them down. I have yet to try this trick, but this spring, I will be wiping my sprayed trim and baseboards with a dryer sheet. It’s believed to keep dust and dirt off longer!

If you have stubborn marks or general grubbiness (thank you children) I love to use a melamine sponge to remove the marks.

Blankets

Each Spring, when I’m cleaning our bedding, I go into each room and collect all the throw blankets. I have a cabinet full of them, and even the ones we don’t use often, get washed and refreshed! It’s a good time to put the thicker blankets away and keep the lighter ones out for the Spring and Summer.

After these chores, I guarantee you will be feeling far better about the entire Spring Cleaning process. The best part is, you can throw in the towel here and know you freshened up your home for the season, or you can try to stay motivated and keep the momentum going! Either way, I’m proud of you and hope this Spring is the best one yet!

Happy cleaning!
