When I found out that the teachers at my son’s school didn’t have a place to take breaks or relax during the day I knew I wanted to change that. There is no better way that I could love on the people that love my son than by giving them a place to retreat and recharge during the day. Here is how we made a Teacher Zen Den for my son’s school!
The director showed me this storage corner, which upon first glance didn’t look like much, but I knew we could turn it into something amazing. You have to work with what you have.
After we got all of the storage items cleared out, there was a pretty good footprint to work with. The goal is to make this spot feel super clam so I put together this mood board that focused on calming colors, textures, spa vibes.
The budget for this project was tight so I was looking for ways to bring in the feeling of luxury in small ways. We also had some restrictions due to the building (aka we couldn’t paint, no space heaters, etc.) so we had to get creative and work within those parameters.
The first thing that we did was add peel and stick wallpaper. A perfect solution to add some color while keeping the space rental friendly. I went for a solid color peel and stick 1) because it is so much easier to install and 2) because I thought a pattern in such a small space might be a little busy. We were going for serene.
A lounge chair was a MUST so we found a budget massage recliner on amazon. We decided to take a chance on something with good reviews and it is surprisingly comfortable for the price.
We added some art and faux plants to make it feel a little more cozy. Etsy is a great place to look for inexpensive art that can be printed locally according to your needs.
One of our splurge items was a mini fridge. I know a cold beverage ALWAYS makes me feel better so I wanted to make sure that was always an option for the teachers.
We added shelving that was going to act as a recharge station, giving the teachers access to sweet treats, lotions, and other items that could help them take a few minutes for themselves. I went with these from amazon because they weren’t too shallow or deep for the space, the perfect in between at 8 inches. It was important that we stocked these shelves with tons of items that would truly help the teachers relax. If you want to replicate a decompress station at your school here is what we added to ours:
- Lotion
- Hand Sanitizer
- Candy
- Snacks
- Medication
- Gum
- Mints
- Mirror
- Room Spray
- Magazines
- Mindfulness cards
- Deodorant spray
- Charging cords
And here is the final space! I couldn’t stop smiling when I revealed it to the teachers. They loved it. I hope this brings them joy for years to come and serves them well.
